OEM vs ODM vs Private Label Clothing: Which Route Fits Your Brand?

· 5 min read · Khairay Group

Short answer: choose OEM when you already have your own design or tech pack, ODM when you want to start from a manufacturer's existing base style and adapt it, and private label when you want your own brand on the finished garment. Private label is not a separate production method — it is usually combined with OEM or ODM.

OEM: your design, made to your specification

In OEM (original equipment manufacturing) production, you supply the design: a tech pack, a reference garment or detailed drawings with measurements. The manufacturer makes patterns, sources the agreed materials and produces to that specification. OEM gives you the most control over fit, fabric and details, and asks the most of you in preparation.

  • You provide: tech pack or reference garment, size chart, materials and colours
  • Best for: brands with an established design team or a garment they want reproduced
  • Watch for: who owns the patterns, and how changes after sampling are approved

ODM: adapt an existing base style

In ODM (original design manufacturing), the manufacturer offers a base style it has already developed, and you change selected elements such as fabric, colour, fit details, trims or branding. Development is faster because the core pattern already exists, but the design is less exclusive.

  • You provide: the base style you want, plus the changes and branding
  • Best for: new brands, fast launches and range extensions
  • Watch for: which details can change, and whether other buyers can order the same base

Private label: your brand on the finished product

Private label covers the branding layer: woven or printed neck labels, care labels, hangtags, printed or embroidered logos, and branded packaging. A private label garment can be fully custom (OEM) or adapted from a base style (ODM).

How to choose

  1. If you have a tech pack or a garment to match, start with OEM
  2. If you have an idea but no finished design, ask which base styles are available (ODM)
  3. Decide your branding needs — labels, tags, packaging and decoration — for either route
  4. Share your target quantity early; it affects which materials and trims are practical

Khairay Group works across all three: OEM production to your specification, ODM development from base styles, and private label branding, with minimum order quantities starting at 20 pieces and final feasibility confirmed in the quotation.
