Sourcing Apparel From Pakistan vs India, China, Bangladesh, Turkey and Vietnam

· 7 min read · Khairay Group

Short answer: there is no single best country for apparel sourcing. China, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Turkey and India are among the world's largest clothing exporters, each with different strengths, and Pakistan combines a cotton-based textile industry with specialist clusters such as Sialkot. The right choice depends on your product, quantity, destination market and timeline — and on the individual factory more than the country.

Pakistan

  • Cotton grown and processed locally, with spinning, weaving, knitting and garment making in the same country
  • Specialist clusters, including Sialkot, long known for sports goods, sportswear, gloves and leather products
  • EU GSP+ beneficiary, which gives eligible Pakistani exports reduced or zero EU import duties
  • Consider: sea freight to Europe and North America takes longer than from producers closer to those markets, such as Turkey for European buyers

India

  • A large cotton-producing country with an extensive, integrated textile industry
  • Established clusters such as Tirupur for cotton knitwear
  • Known for cotton basics, woven garments and embroidered or hand-finished details

China

  • The world's largest clothing exporter in WTO trade statistics
  • An extensive domestic supply of fabrics, trims and accessories, which helps with complex or technical products
  • Consider: duties on Chinese-made apparel in some destination markets; check current rates before deciding

Bangladesh

  • One of the largest clothing exporters, concentrated on high-volume knitted and woven basics
  • Duty-free access to the EU under the Everything But Arms arrangement as a least developed country; its scheduled graduation from that status will change its preferences after a transition period
  • Consider: many factories are set up for large order quantities, so check minimums early

Turkey

  • Customs union with the EU, and short transit times to European markets
  • Known for fashion, denim and fast-response production for European buyers
  • Consider: compare quotes on the same specification, since proximity and speed to market are part of the price

Vietnam

  • A leading clothing exporter, known for technical sportswear and outerwear
  • EU–Vietnam Free Trade Agreement in force since 2020, phasing out duties on many apparel products
  • Consider: capacity and minimums vary widely between factories, so confirm them for your order

What matters more than the country

  1. Product fit: does the factory make your type of garment and decoration?
  2. Minimum quantities: set by each factory and product, not by country
  3. Sampling and written approval before bulk production
  4. Quality checkpoints before, during and after production
  5. Trade preferences and duties for your destination market — confirm current rates with your customs broker
  6. Communication, documentation and the evidence behind any claim
